Play Therapy is an evidence-based treatment primarily for children aged 3 to 12 years old. It can also be highly beneficial for older children and adults; for instance, we use sand trays and figures to explore inner worlds in a safe, non-directive environment.
Play: The Child’s Language
For young children, toys serve as words and play is their language. A trained professional facilitates this therapeutic approach using play-based activities, providing a secure environment where clients can communicate feelings with or without verbal expression, develop socially, try new experiences, and learn through experimentation.
The therapeutic space supports children to:
- Communicate emotions and thoughts without needing direct verbalisation
- Foster social and developmental growth
- Engage in experiential learning, new activities, and risk-taking
- Work through trial and error, all while enjoying the process
Effective for a Wide Range of Challenges
Play therapy supports children working through:
- Emotional Regulation (anxiety, low mood)
- Relational Issues (peer and family struggles)
- Trauma
- Grief, Separation, or Loss
- Self-Esteem and Confidence
For children experiencing trauma, play therapy integrates naturally with EMDR Therapy, offering a gentle, child-centred path to healing. Older children may also benefit from our child and youth therapy services.
The Play Therapy Room
Our rooms are intentionally stocked with a curated selection of toys and creative arts materials, including sand trays, miniature objects, puppets, art supplies, and make-believe props. Symbolic play through objects allows children to process challenging emotions safely, at their own pace.
